Nas vs Eminem

I saw an intelligent discussion on rapgenius about this topic
These two emcees are arguably in anyone's top 10 or even top 5, I wanna hear your opinions (based on creativity, technical skill, impact etc)

My pick is nas.

Nas is great and everything, and is one of the greatest rappers to ever touch the mic, but Eminem's skill back in 1997-2003 couldn't be touched. Eminem is the most successful rapper of all time and anybody who's anybody has heard of him. Only people who listen to Hip Hop know of Nas. I'm not saying that popularity = skill, creativity, or musical talent, but Eminem's music made a huge impact on rappers and pretty much all white rappers today. If it wasn't for Eminem, these white rappers today wouldn't have a place in Hip Hop and would be shelved regardless of how talented they are. He built the bridge for these artists to become successful. Not to mention that he was one of the most successful mainstream artists in history and made rap more popular. Nas was/is an excellent MC, but I don't think he made as big of an impact as Em did.

yes eminem took rap to a whole other level. but nas is still putting out classic albums 20 years in the game. cant say the same for eminem. eminem is one of the greatest of all time but nas has been doing it more consistantly over a longer period of time.

like you said 97-03 was eminems hay day, now he is still dope but nothing and i mean nothing like he used to be.

If everyone on these forums say their opinions majority will be eminem (I included)

illmatic is a "super" classic though and is heavily respected by more MCs than almost any other album. That is a big reason nas is mentioned as a great believe it or not.

If you're gonna say eminem...back up your opinion

I'd have to go with Nas tbh.
He has more classics & has a much better track record than Eminem.

Em is like...3/7, album wise?
He fell off a while ago, about 10 years ago to be accurate.

Nas created one of, if not the best album in Hip Hop history (Illmatic, which arguably impacted hip hop more than any other album). He's much more consistent than Eminem, he has more content/subject matter, etc.

And I know some Em fans get hard on's from lyrical/technical stuff, so I'll put it out there & say Nas is one of the most technical/lyrical rapers to exist.

Buddie hit the nail on the head. Hip Hop would not be nearly as popular if it wasn't for 90's Eminem.

Eminem, not so much that he's better, and DEFINITELY not because of his recent albums, but because he was such a part of my life when I was younger that in any situation it's impossible for me to put anyone above him, lol. Hops the only dude I respect as much as Em musically. Nas is probably more skilled, but my vote still goes to the Slim Shady part of em (SSLP,MMLP,TES)

Eminem's flow is 100x better than Nas'. And Nas said Hip Hop is dead and got hated a lot also by me cause it's not true. He thinks he is so much more than he is. He is very good but personally I dont like him that much but I know he's very big etc.

Eminem > Nas by far IMO.

lol nas did say hip hop was dead, but was he lying? at the time rap music was so fucking dry there was hardly any good artist out there anymore. it has gotten alot better since he dropped that album. i dont think you realize how big that album was for hip hop at that time. that is one of my favorite modern nas albums. HHID = modern day hip hop classic
