Album Review: Nas - Illmatic Empty Album Review: Nas - Illmatic

Wed 12 Mar 2014 - 14:55
1. The Genesis (Intro) 8/10
Quite possibly the best non-song intro of all-time, this song opens up Illmatic perfectly.
2. N.Y State of Mind 10/10
This gritty track describes the ghetto life of Queens, NYC. Nas describes how the racism of cops and the will to survive makes for a kill-or-be-killed environment. Considered by many to be the greatest rap song of all time, the classic line "I Never sleep, cuz sleep is the cousin of death" is a stalwart in an ever-changing rap game.
3. Life's A Bitch 9/10
The classic chorus describes NYC in a nutshell.
"Life's a bitch and then you die, that's why we get high, cuz you never know when you're gonna go" marked the beginning of AZ's mainstream career, and probably was the highlight of his illustrious career.
4. The World is Yours 10/10
The song that started the Jay-Z/Nas beef, is the biggest challenger to NY State of Mind for best song on this album. The Pete Rose feature perfected this song, and Nas' lyricism blends well with Rose's jazz-like chorus.
5. Halftime 8.5/10
Probably the worst song on Illmatic, this song would be #1 on most other albums. Halftime is just a feel-good song with a heavy beat.
6. Memory Lane (Sittin' in da Park) 10/10
"Lemme take a trip down Memory Lane," Nas illustrates his life before rap, and his days as Kid Wave.
7. One Love 9.5/10
One of the simplest, yet catchy choruses of all time, One Love is a letter in the form of a rap to a homie in prison. "When the cops came you should'a slid to my crib" shows how much Nas cares for his own.
8. One Time 4 Your Mind 10/10
The most overlooked song on the whole album, One Time 4 Your Mind is just a song that doesn't have a catchy chorus or hard beat, but the lyrics are near-perfect.
9. Represent 10/10
In this song, Nas shows love to QB, NY and all of his friends there and six feet under. The heavy-hitting beat blends well with Nas' voice in this track.
10. It Ain't Hard to Tell 10/10
One of the most sampled beats of all time, It Ain't Hard to Tell is another challenger to N.Y State of Mind and The World is Yours. The voice samples in this song are amazing, and hard hitting lines are crafted well.
OVERALL: 10/10
