- "I want to make entertaining albums and provide some type of introspective point-of-view, but not take myself too seriously"
- He would like to get into comedy.

Jarren Benton is an up-and-coming hip-hop artist born & raised in Decatur, Georgia. His previous album Freebasing With Kevin Bacon was a fun, artistic & entertaining mesh of Jarren’s heavy-hitting flow and unique attitude & style. His single “Skitzo” has generated over 1.3 million views on YouTube catapulting Jarren into the national spotlight. His next album My Grandma’s Basement is dropping June 11th, his first project since being signed to Funk Volume, a record label who’s roster also includes Hopsin, SwizZz, Dizzy Wright, and DJ Hoppa. Pre-order (autographed CD) My Grandma’s Basement: HERE
Jadaswiss hopped on a call with Jarren earlier this week to learn more about how he began his hip-hop career, to discuss his new album, and to find out why Jarren Benton is a “G”.
Who/what has been your inspiration for rapping? It was a mix of everything. I come from a musical background. My mom managed a record store so back then she’d bring a hella hip-hop shit around so that’s how my love for hip-hop was discovered. I got into Snoop Dog, Wu-Tang Clan, Outkast, Eminem and was always into all types of hip-hop. I was never close-minded so I listened to east coast, west coast, underground shit and the commercial shit. It all had an impact on me. On the other hand, even rock had an influence on me. Early on I was heavy into bands like Nine Inch Nails and Led Zeppelin who have had influence on my stage performances and all that.
What’s a typical day like with Jarren Benton? Well you got different Jarrens… you got the family Jarren with his kids running around crazy and I’m teetering between killing them and trying to stay patient. I have an understanding of how people can actually kill their kids. That’s the family Jarren. Then there’s the turn’d up Jarren which involves a lot of PBR, Vodka, good music & good times. So after I kill my kids I like to indulge in alcoholic beverages [laughs].
Give me 3 words that describe Jarren Benton? [laughs] Crazy. Edgy. Intelligent.
Celebrity crush? Hmm… I like that new black chick from the Today Show. Also that chick that plays in the movie Colombiana, Zoe Saldana. I’ll take her too.
I’ve listened to your album Freebasing w/ Kevin Bacon? It’s different. You have great flow, attitude, you’re spontaneous, and just different. Where do you fit within the whole hip-hop realm? I honestly feel like I don’t fit in with none of the dudes out there. I respect a lot of them and I’m diggin what they’re doing, but as far as me I feel like I just don’t fit in. I was inspired by different types of music so I’m about killing it with bars but also having a good time. I want to make entertaining albums and provide some type of introspective point-of-view, but not take myself too seriously.
Where do you see yourself going? I’m also a producer so eventually I’d like to get back into producing. I’d like to produce other shit outside of hip-hop like trip-hop, indie stuff. I see the brand branching out beyond just music. I definitely want to branch out beyond just music, into comedy and shit like that.
Favorite way to smoke? My favorite way to smoke lately has been by myself. You know when you smoke and it just opens up so much shit in your mind and you get to thinking and analyzing shit. When I’m around people and that high it’s just not enjoyable. Lately I’ve been smoking for meditation. I like to get high, chill on my couch and just fix my problems. I use marijuana now as more of a spiritual remedy.
Alright I’m going to throw a few would you rathers your way… ok, ok
Would you rather be 4 ft 5 or 7 ft 8? 7 ft 8
Would you rather be able to speak any language fluently or be able to speak to animals? Speak to animals.
Private Jet or Yacht? I’d say a yacht.
Would you rather have a pet siberian tiger or gigantic shark tank in your house? I’d rather have a shark tank cause having a tiger in your house you never really know what the fuck is gunna happen.
If you had 24 hours to live what would you do? I’d probably chill with my family and just take it easy. It’s crazy cause I have a song called “24 Hours to Live” and I’m doing a lot of crazy shit, but I probably wouldn’t do all that. I’d probably just take it easy.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Being invisible. You could use it to your benefit but also do some perv type shit with it.
What would be your Last Supper? Probably some type of thai food. I’m real into thai food. Some type of curry dish with rice.
What exciting stuff is upcoming for Jarren Benton in 2013? Right now I’m dropping a project that’s coming out 6/11 called “My Grandma’s Basement”. It’s the most diverse, full-length project I’ve put out. It’s got the shit you can turn up, the introspective shit, and also some hardcore hip-hop on there. I feel real good about this project, it’s definitely one of the dopest projects I’ve put out. I’ve been working with a ton of producers on it namely Kate, Spitzwell, The Kraken, Roc N Mayne, OH, M16, and Reckless Dex. I also got hella features on there including features from Hopsin, Dizzy Wright, SwizZz, RA The Rugged Man, Big Rube, Planet VI, Vinnie Paz, Elz Jenkins, and Pounds. We’re real excited about it. Go get yourself one on 6/11.
Why are you a G? Why am I a G? Cause I’m not trying to be a G so that’s what makes me a G. I don’t try and go out there and be a G, I just am a G.

Just read this. And it's not 24 hours to live. It's 5 hours to live.

I never thought of Jarren Benton as an NIN or Trip-Hop fan.
