Patrol Cars Set Ablaze

TUOLUMNE COUNTY, CA - Three Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department patrol cars were purposely set on fire Thursday morning, according to Sheriff Jim Mele.
A Union Democrat article stated a deputy at the Yaney Ave. Sheriff's administration building heard strange noises coming from the parking lot at the rear of the building and discovered the burning vehicles when he went to investigate.
The Sonora Fire Department was called and arrived shortly after 3 a.m. and extinguished the flames. However, the cars, which cost about $40,000 each, were destroyed, Mele said.
"They punched us in the nose," Mele said.
Once the fire was out, investigators discovered a private vehicle belonging to an unknown person parked in between two patrol cars.
Mele said the fire was intentionally set and he therefore put in calls to state and federal authorities to determine whether this could be considered "an act of terrorism against the department." Agents with the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were investigating.
According to Mele, the sheriff's department is reviewing surveillance video of the area before, during and after the fire, but currently there were no leads on the case.
As for replacing the patrol units, the county is self-insured. The sheriff's department has 100 vehicles in its fleet, Mele said.
