A film is being made about Nas' life & his father's relationship called "Time Is Illmatic": The JOURNEY, The MUSIC, The LEGACY
Time Is Illmatic is a feature length documentary film, told through the lens of rapper NAS and his bluesman father OLU DARA, which deconstructs Nas' indelible rap album Illmatic and the socio-economic and cultural conditions that inspired it.
In 1994, Columbia Records released NAS’ Illmatic, a critically acclaimed rap album that encapsulated the socio-political outlook, enduring spirit, and collective angst of a generation of young black men searching for their voice in America. Time Is Illmatic captures Nas, nearly twenty years later, as he deconstructs the DNA of this impactful work by taking an existential journey to his familial roots, including the life and times of his bluesman father, OLU DARA.
At the time of Illmatic’s release, 1 in 3 black men between the ages of 20 and 29 were under correctional supervision or control. Today, just 41 percent of black men graduate from high school.
This documentary film reveals how Olu and Nas’ relationship survived distance, dysfunction, and the lure of the streets at a time in America when black father-son relations were most tested.
