Floyd Mayweather Jr. Sentenced to 90 Days in Jail

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be starting out the new year behind
bars. A Las Vegas judge sentenced him to 90 days in jail for allegedly
assaulting his ex-girlfriend at her home in September 2010.

Mayweather pled guilty to a lesser domestic-violence misdemeanor
charge and no contest to two harassment misdemeanor charges, according
to the LA Times.

Along with a stint in jail, he must complete 100 hours of community service and pay a $2,500 fine.

Mayweather’s lawyer Karen Winckler called the sentence, which she plans to appeal, unusual.

According to the Judge Melissa Saragosa, his punishment is just. “No
matter who you are, you have consequences to your actions when they
escalate to this level of violence.”

reports Mayweather admitted to striking his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris
and twisting her arm. Police reported he also threatened to kill
Harris, and he also threatened two of their children, who witnessed the
attack.

This is not the first time he has been charged with domestic violence.

“He just continually gets himself into trouble and he is able to get
himself out of it as well,” prosecutor Lisa Luzaich said. “The only
thing that’s going to get this man’s attention is incarceration.”

By agreeing to a plea deal, Mayweather avoided a felony conviction and multiple years in prison.

He has to report to jail by Jan. 6, and will serve most of his 90-day
sentence, which means he likely won’t be able to fight Manny Pacquiao
in the late spring.
