Rage - Awesome Weapons

As tends to be the case in post-apocalyptic settings, most of everything you encounter in Rage has an insatiable desire to kill you. More than anything else, the mutants, bandits and heavily armored Authority forces want to pummel you into the afterlife. Good thing that you can collect items from dead bodies and from around environments and fuse them together into special gear items and alternate ammunition types.

Sentry bots and turrets can be especially useful if you're outnumbered. The bots are spider-like machines that skitter around combat zones and fire at anything hostile with a nose-mounted gun. They're aggressive things and aren't afraid to charge directly at an enemy to pounce. The turrets, because they're stationary, work better for when you're getting assaulted by waves of enemies, and will auto-fire at anything hostile that wanders into range. As a nice twist, when the machines break or you have no more use for them, you can reclaim some of the materials it took to build them so it'll be easier to construct more later on.

For ammunition types, there's quite a bit to play around with. The crossbow has some of the most interesting options, including mind control and dynamite bolts. The mind control variety let you take over whichever enemy you successfully hit. You can then steer their jittering body around for a limited time. Then, if you're able to steer them toward other enemies, you can trigger their body to explode, taking out multiple targets.

The dynamite bolts are equally deadly. These stick into enemies, and will instantly kill lesser ones. The twist is the bolt won't detonate immediately. In the moment of delay before the charge explodes, enemies will flail around uselessly in a panicked attempt to avoid being blown to bits. It never works, and after a few seconds they're invariably turned into a fine red mist. It's gruesome and satisfying in a way that should be familiar to any id Software fan.

There are many other options as well. The shotgun can basically be turned into a grenade launcher, EMP grenades can disable electric walls and stun enemy bots, and you can run around remote control bomb cars to surprise groups of enemies. You also get wingsticks, which should be stocked at all times.

Wings sticks are sort of like boomerangs, or more specifically the boomerang used by the creepy kid from the Mad Max movies. That means wing sticks can cut into and through anything they touch. They're off-hand weapons, so tossing them doesn't interrupt your shooting all that much. If you don't aim well enough sometimes the sticks will miss, sometimes they'll hit a piece of the environment and break, sometimes they'll stick into an enemy's head and sometimes they'll cut it clean off. Keep these well stocked and you'll be in good shape, especially if your ammunition reserves are low.

That's not an exhaustive list of what you can do in Rage, but should give you a good idea of what's possible beyond the standard shooting. And if all else fails, you can always smack enemies in the side of their heads with whatever weapon you're carrying.

I've watched videos of people playing that Penumbra game and that shit is scary as hell lol

TBH Resistance wasn't all that scary... more of a sci-fi action shooter with some horror elements thrown at you occasionally. I have a feeling the screenshots for Rage are going to be scarier than the game itself. If anything its just gonna be intense and cause a good adrenaline rush

I haven't played Amnesia, lol. Penumbra makes me shit my pants.


But to get on topic, Rage looks like a pretty cool game.
